Research Topic: Effects on Reducing Parents' Perceived Stress and Improving Coping: FirstStep2Health Graduation Year: 2025

Undergraduate Research in the Neighborhoods

FirstStep2Health is an intervention program promoting healthy lifestyles in low-income families. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of intervention on reducing parents’ perceived stress and improving coping strategies. A total of 57 mothers (29 intervention and 28 control) completed a demographic survey, the 10-item Perceived Stress Scale, and the Brief-COPE via Qualtrics at baseline and post-intervention. The analysis showed a significant increase in problem-based coping in the intervention group, however, the control group’s usage of problem-based coping decreased. The perceived stress level mean of the intervention group decreased by 1.647 and 1.15 for the control group. The results support FirstStep2Health intervention’s promise on improving problem-focused coping strategies and implies improvements of stress level, highlighting the importance of promoting healthy lifestyle to achieve overall mental well-being.
